Cabela’s was born in 1961. It all started when Dick Cabala decided to sell fishing flies he had purchased while attending a furniture show in Chicago. Mr. Cabala ran his first newspaper ad that read, “12 hand-tied flies for $1.” He received only one response. Mr. Cabala was not deterred, as he created a new campaign. He rewrote the ad to read, “Free Introductory offer!” 5 hand tied Flies… 25c Postage….Handling” and placed it in numerous national outdoor magazines. The orders began pouring in. What began as a kitchen table business has grown into largest retail, mail-order, and internet outdoor outfitter in the world today.

The Cabela’s online experience was very pleasant and my products arrived within the expected time. From reading the experiences of others, it seems Cabela’s may be trying a bit too hard with the cross marketing of its products, mainly its store credit card. Many have also reported issues with customer service but this may be a localized problem at a few locations.

The cash advance and balance transfer fees and charges on the Cabela’s Club Visa credit card seem high. Mainly the balance transfer and cash advance APR is over 25%. Paying an APR that high is a pretty good way to quickly run out of money.
