  1. Capital One was born from a spinoff from the old Signet Financial Corp in 1995. The company began as primarily a credit card issuer, and later moved into retail banking, loans, insurance, etc.

This company has a bit of a checkered past. It has been fined by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau as well as the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency for misleading millions of customers. The company was also sued for violating the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. Perhaps the weirdest issue with Capital One is their terms of service, in which the company states that it has the right to contact you in any manner they chose. This right includes personal visits to the borrower’s home or work place. They also claim to have the right to mask their identity on caller IDs including identifying themselves in any manner they choose.

Ok, this is just creepy. With terms such as those mentioned, borrowing money from these folks is almost like borrowing money from a loan shark. There are a very large number of negative reviews regarding this company. My personal experience with this card is also negative in nature and I cannot recommend this company at this time. It is my hope that Capital One gets it together someday and become more customer oriented. Some of the fees on its credit cards geared to people with less than perfect credit are extremely high. The company is headquartered in Richmond, Virginia.
