City of Palo Alto Utilities (CPAU) is a city-owned utility that provides electric, gas, water, fiber optic and wastewater services to the residents and businesses of Palo Alto, California. The utility was established in 1896 with the introduction of water supply system. The utilities founders reasoned that lower prices could be provided if the city had its own utility service, and low charges continue to be a priority for the utility. Wastewater and electric services soon followed. Today Palo Alto is the only Californian city that operates six essential utility services.
